Panaji: In a major move to provide legal status to thousands of Goan households, the State government has issued three circulars to regularise houses constructed before 1972, including those built on Alvara or Bhatkar lands. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that the initiative will come into effect from August 1 and is expected to benefit over one lakh houses across the State.
As per the new procedure, the regularisation will be carried out in three stages. First, the Deputy Collector will issue a Settlement Land Certificate. Next, the respective Panchayat or Municipality will verify and certify the structure as a legal one. Finally, a Legal Home Certificate will be issued to the house owner. The entire process has been designed to be completed within a span of seven days.
CM Sawant emphasised that this step is aimed at addressing long-standing concerns of residents living in homes that lacked formal legal recognition despite being present in official survey plans prior to 1972.
