PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today said that Government is trying to ensure that the constituencies for the ST community would be reserved before the 2027 Assembly election.
AAP MLA Capt Venzy Viegas had asked about the present status and the action taken on the report sent by the Director of Tribal Welfare on four Assembly seats reserved for ST Communities to the Secretary (Tribal Welfare).
“Goa government is trying to ensure that the constituencies for ST community would be reserved before 2027 Assembly election: CM Dr Pramod Sawant told the House,” said CM Sawant.
He further said that as per the information furnished by the Director of Tribal Welfare, the Proposal for ST reservation of seats in four Assembly in the State of Goa has been sent to the Government for consideration.
“The existing status of Assembly as delimited by the Delimitation Commission cannot be changed till the next delimitation exercise, which is due to be taken up after the just census after the year 2026 as mandated under the Constitution of India read with the provision of Delimitation Act 2002,” he added.
Sawant said that as per the Population Census 2011, out of 40 Assembly Constituencies, 04 (Four) Constituencies are proposed to be reserved for ST Communities and 01 (one) for SC Communities.
Benaulim MLA Capt Venzy said that out of the existing 40 seats, 4 constituencies need to be reserved for the ST population. Mayem, Sangem Priol and Quepem constituencies are identified by the directorate of Tribal Welfare.
“An important issue of reservation of ST Seats has been sidelined for the last 20 years,” he added.
