BICHOLIM: The Goan Grappling team has been selected for playing at the national level, and 30 players from Goa would represent the state.
According to the information provided by the president of the Goa Grappling Committee, Sandeep Pednekar told that Grappling is a new game in Goa, and they have the vision to make this game popular in the state.
“Grappling is a combination of Judo, karate and wrestling. In June, we had taken a session, and 60 players had taken part in the same and our of them we are trying to send 20 boys and 10 girls at the national level.” Pednekar told.
For this game, any person above 14 years can participate, and weight should be between 35 kg to 130 kg. “We are sending the team from Goa to national level games. This game is recognized by the wrestling federation of India, and this is the third event held at Delhi.” An official, Jaywant Bobhate, told.
“Grappling, is hand to hand combat describes sports that consist of gripping or seizing the opponent.[Grappling is used at close range to gain a physical advantage over an opponent, either by imposing a position or causing injury. Grappling is a broad term that encompasses many disciplines.” Jaywant told.
These various martial arts can be practised both as combat sports and for self-defence. Grappling contests often involve takedowns and ground control and may end when a contestant concedes defeat, also known as a submission or tap out.
