New Delhi:
Karnataka Water Resources Minister D.K. Shivakumar has asserted that the Goa Government has no authority to oppose the Kalasa-Banduri water diversion project. His remarks came following a high-level meeting held in New Delhi with Union Ministers Bhupender Yadav (Environment, Forest and Climate Change), Gajendra Singh Shekhawat (Jal Shakti), and Karnataka Environment Minister S.R. Patil.
The meeting focused on three major water-related projects vital for Karnataka, including the contentious Kalasa-Banduri project. Shivakumar maintained that the project is legally sanctioned and said that opposition from Goa holds no legal weight.
“The Goa Government has no jurisdiction to oppose the Kalasa-Banduri project. The project is already cleared and we will proceed as per the law,” Shivakumar said, adding that further discussions will be held with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi to determine legal pathways for implementation.
The Kalasa-Banduri Nala project, which aims to divert water from the Mahadayi River to meet the drinking water needs of drought-prone areas in Karnataka, has long been a point of contention between Goa and Karnataka. Goa has consistently opposed the project, citing ecological concerns and potential impact on downstream water flow.
Shivakumar’s latest comments suggest Karnataka is firm on moving ahead, signalling possible fresh tensions in the inter-state water dispute.
