PANAJI: The continuous rains on Sunday and Monday have led to a flood-like situation in Goa, with several parts of the State, including the Capital city, being partially submerged under water.
The roads in the capital city or the Smart City were flooded in many parts of Bhatulem, EDC Patto, and Campal, which led to traffic congestion at many places in the State.
The sub-way near Goa Medical College, as usual, was flooded, and the main National Highway opposite the GMC was also flooded.
Traffic from Panaji to Margao and Panaji to Mapusa was partially hampered, and many vehicles broke down.
Incessant rains in Pernem as it wreaked havoc in Pernem as caused panic due to a flood-like situation in many parts.
Sources said that sludge water coming down from the Mopa airport site entered the houses in Nagzar and Tulaskarwadi, Casarvanem etc.
In Sattari, the temporary Paikul bridge, constructed last year for the convenience of locals after the main bridge collapsed, was also washed away.
At Vasco, an old compound wall of the PWD Sewerage treatment plant at Baina collapsed due to the heavy rainfall on Monday morning.
Neighbouring residents demand that the height of the wall should be kept shorter and the new compound wall to be built.
Heavy rainfall has not spared Goa for the last few days. In Vasco, city rainfall has continued to fall for the last two days. The effect of this heavy rainfall was that an old tall compound wall of the PWD Sewage treatment plant collapsed today.
When questioned, a local woman said that they were fortunate that their children were in the school when the incident happened otherwise, their children tend to play near the wall.
Another local said that the compound wall that fell down is old. The PWD department should build a new compound wall with a shorter height.
One more local said that he had kept his bike near the compound wall, and due to the wall’s collapse, his bike was damaged.
Later, local police and the PWD officers came to the site and reviewed the situation.
