PANAJI: The Central Government has prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of all oral formulations of Nimesulide above 100 mg in immediate-release dosage form, citing potential risks to human health and the availability of safer alternatives.
The ban has been imposed following recommendations of the Drugs Technical Advisory Board. In line with this, the Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration (DFDA), Goa, has issued an advisory to all drug retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, government and private hospitals, dispensaries, nursing homes, and registered medical practitioners across the state to strictly comply with the prohibition.
Doctors and registered medical practitioners have been advised not to prescribe the banned drug, while retailers and wholesalers have been directed not to dispense or distribute these formulations. All healthcare institutions and pharmacies have also been instructed to identify and remove such drugs from their shelves and return them to their respective suppliers, with due intimation to the DFDA.
The notification regarding the ban has been uploaded on the official website of the Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration, Goa. Authorities have warned that any violation or non-compliance with the ban will attract stringent penal action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
