PANAJI: In a major step towards building climate-resilient cities and addressing rising urban temperatures, the Goa Forest Department, in collaboration with the Department of Urban Development, is set to roll out a comprehensive Urban Forestry initiative across municipalities in the state.
Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane, who chaired a joint meeting of key stakeholders, announced that the initiative aims to create vital ‘green lungs’ within urban landscapes—green spaces that will enhance air quality, support biodiversity, and offer shaded, healthier public spaces for citizens.
“Urban forestry is central to our fight against climate change and rising temperatures in cities. This mission is a collective pledge to protect our environment and improve quality of life for future generations,” Rane said.
The session brought together officials from the Forest and Urban Development departments, municipal heads, and other allied agencies. Participants engaged in presentations and interactive discussions on actionable steps for implementing urban forestry projects, with a strong emphasis on site identification, community involvement, and long-term maintenance.
One of the flagship components of the initiative is the transformation of the Sonsodo area using the Miyawaki technique—a method of afforestation that promotes rapid growth of dense, native vegetation. In addition, plans include the development of vertical gardens to boost green cover in high-density urban zones.
All municipal chairpersons and councillors present pledged their full support to the mission, emphasizing the importance of coordinated, sustainable efforts. Officials also agreed to hold periodic review meetings to assess progress and steer projects in the right direction.
The Forest Department, in coordination with the Urban Development Department, will closely monitor the implementation to ensure that projects are both effective and sustainable.
The Urban Forestry initiative marks a significant step in Goa’s environmental roadmap, setting the tone for green urban transformation and proactive climate action.
