VASCO: In a drive across Goa, the Department of Legal Metrology seized a substantial number of packaged goods, enforcing the Legal Metrology Act 2009 and Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
The drive, conducted statewide, focused on packaged commodities that failed to meet mandatory labeling requirements.
Nitin P. Purushan, Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology, South Zone-I, Margao, speaking to reporters at Vasco said that the department had carried out raids across all Patanjali Outlets in Goa and seized 59 packages worth Rs 50,000 for not having month and year of manufacturing/ packing date
” Among the seized items were 09 packages of Patanjali Amrit Srot copper pot-style jugs,
33 packages of Patanjali Amrit Srot copper bottles, 16 packages of Patanjali Amrit Srot copper glasses and 01 package of Patanjali Amrit Srot mutka.
These items, worth approximately Rs. 50,000, were confiscated due to missing manufacturing and packaging dates.” Said Purushan
“Additionally, following a consumer complaint regarding overcharging, 248 packages of electrical goods were seized from a Panaji outlet for not bearing mandatory declaration as required under the Legal Metrology Act 2009 and Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
The Legal Metrology Department urges consumers to verify essential details on all packaged commodities before purchase, including Name and complete adress of the manufacturer/ packet / importer, common generic name , country of origin in case of imported packages, month and year of manufacture/ pre packing date, import date, net quantity, MRP inclusive of all taxes , name and complete address of the person and office , email address and contact details in case of consumer complaint and unit sale price ” said Purushan
“Consumers who find non-compliant packaging are encouraged to report it by calling the department’s Quick Response Number at 9403301977.
The department pledges to take strict action on such violations. Last but not the least , we call for consumer vigilance, emphasizing , “Jago Grahak Jago.”
The drive will continue until violations under the provisions of Legal Metrology Act 2009 read with Legal Metrology ( packaged commodities ) rules 2011 is eradicated ” said Purushan
