PANAJI: Aligning with the “TB Mukt Bharat” vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane on Friday said that Goa is steadily advancing towards becoming a tuberculosis-free state.
He was speaking at a special function held at Institute Menezes Braganza Hall, Panaji, where the Rotary Foundation, Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera, Rotary Club of Dona Paula, and Rotary International Districts from South Korea, USA, and India formally handed over AI-enabled ultraportable digital X-ray systems to the Directorate of Health Services under Global Grant GG2478242.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Rane said the advanced diagnostic units would significantly strengthen Goa’s TB detection and treatment infrastructure, especially in rural areas. “This mission is about saving lives. I express my gratitude to the Rotary Clubs for dedicating this equipment to the people of Goa,” he said, while also announcing that a state-of-the-art cancer hospital, developed with Tata Memorial Centre, will soon come up in the state.
As part of the project, four Prorad ultraportable AI-powered X-ray systems have been installed at PHC Navelim, PHC Betki, PHC Curtorim, and PHC Corlim. These units will help in early detection and treatment of tuberculosis among underprivileged and vulnerable communities. Beyond TB, the systems will also support diagnosis of lung cancer, fractures, and other thoracic conditions during regular health screenings.
The programme, known as the Rotary Panaji Riviera and Dona Paula TB Diagnostics and Cure Program, is a Global Grant initiative aligned with the PM’s goal of a TB-free India by 2025.
A short video showcasing the impact of the TB X-ray systems was screened at the event, followed by felicitation of the donors.
The function was attended by Dr. Rupa Naik, Director, Directorate of Health Services; Rtn. Sharad Pai, District Governor 2024-25, RID 3170; Rtn. Hong Kyoo Jo, District Governor 2024-25, RID 3640 South Korea; Dr. Manish Gaunekar, Chief Medical Officer, National TB Elimination Program; along with senior Rotarians, DHS officers, and doctors.
Rtn. Tanvi Sawant, Club President 2024-25, Rotary Club of Panaji Riviera, welcomed the gathering, while Rtn. Philip Alvares, Club Secretary 2024-25, Rotary Club of Dona Paula, proposed the vote of thanks.
