MARGAO: The Directorate of Health Services, under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), observed **National Dengue Day today with a state-level function aimed at raising public awareness about dengue fever and promoting preventive measures.
The event, held at South Goa District Hospital, Margao, was organized in collaboration with Ayushman Arogya Mandir – Urban Primary Health Centre, Margao. It focused on the theme “Check, Clear and Cover”, encouraging the public to ensure clean surroundings and covered water containers to prevent mosquito breeding.
Chief Guest John Silveira, State Coordinator of Goa Samagra Shiksha, emphasized the need for inter-sectoral collaboration among various departments to effectively combat the dengue menace. He lauded the efforts of the Health Services for their initiatives in this direction.
Dr. Kalpana Mahatme Deputy Director and NVBDCP Coordinator, highlighted that over 500 dengue cases were reported in Goa during 2023 and 2024. So far, 23 cases have been reported in 2025. She stressed on early case reporting, community awareness, and inter-departmental cooperation as vital tools to reduce dengue incidence.
She added that the Health Services are proactively working with Primary Health Centres and allied departments to implement preventive strategies at the grassroots level.
Dr. Rajendra Borkar, Medical Superintendent of South Goa District Hospital, and Shri Krishna Bagali, President of Lions Club, Margao, also spoke at the function, urging people and departments to maintain cleanliness and work collectively in the fight against dengue.
