MAPUSA: As part of the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week (May 12–18), an awareness drive focusing on pedestrian safety was conducted today in Mapusa by the Directorate of Transport in coordination with the Goa Traffic Police, GOACAN, and the Mapusa Municipal Council.
The awareness action began from the area below the RTO office near the KTC Bus Stand and involved on-ground engagement with commuters and motorists. The campaign aimed to reinforce the importance of respecting zebra crossings and giving right of way to pedestrians, in line with this year’s theme: “Safety of Pedestrians and Cyclists.”
GOACAN representatives Ronald Martin and Cedric Souza Cordeiro, RTO officials, traffic police personnel, and municipal staff actively participated in the drive. They distributed educational material, demonstrated safe crossing practices, and reminded vehicle users to follow traffic rules.
Speaking on the occasion, representatives highlighted the grim reality that Goa has already recorded 95 road accident deaths in the first 131 days of 2025, a statistic revealed during a traffic warden training session earlier this week. With most victims being young people, the event underscored the need for urgent, consistent action on road safety.
“Pedestrian safety can no longer be an afterthought. It requires daily commitment from both authorities and the public,” said Ronald Martin of GOACAN.
The drive is part of a broader push to reduce traffic violations, encourage responsible driving, and build a culture of road discipline in Goa.
