PANAJI: The State-level function to observe World Malaria Day was held today at the Institute Menezes Braganza in Panaji.
Organized by the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme and Directorate of Health Services (DHS), the event brought together health workers, doctors, and grassroots staff.
Dr. Dattaram B. Dessai, President of the Indian Medical Association’s Ponda Branch, was the Chief Guest and praised the efforts of health workers in combating malaria in Goa.
He expressed optimism about Goa’s potential to eliminate malaria, citing the state’s small size and educated population.
Dr. Kalpana Mahatme, State Programme Officer of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, highlighted that Goa is targeting malaria elimination by 2025-26.
She also discussed challenges, including imported malaria cases from migrant workers and the need for continued preventive measures.
Ajeet Kumar Mohanty, Research Scientist at the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR), spoke about the upcoming research initiatives, including the use of digital platforms and drone technology to monitor malaria among migrant populations.
The event also recognized health centers and workers for their exemplary efforts in malaria elimination.
Dr. Rupa Naik, Director of DHS, acknowledged the challenges posed by the tourist season and migrant labor but credited active surveillance and prompt treatment for Goa’s success in malaria control.
