PANAJI: The Goa Olympic Association (GOA) has made the decision to return the cheque issued by the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) towards the participation of Goan athletes in the upcoming 38th National Games to be held in Uttarakhand.
This step has been taken after a detailed review of the financial support approved by the SAG, which falls short of the requirements and benchmarks set in previous editions of the National Games held in Goa and Gujarat.
The GOA had estimated an amount of Rs 7,200 per player to cover 3AC train fares, a standard that ensures athletes travel comfortably and arrive in optimal condition to compete.
However, the SAG’s approval of Rs 6,000 per player falls short of this expectation, adding unnecessary financial strain on the participants.
Daily allowances and Travel Allowances for athletes have also been reduced from Rs 500 to Rs 300, a decrease that undermines the basic needs of sportspersons during national-level competitions.
Additionally, the kit allowance has been reduced to Rs 3,000. The kits provided for the National Games typically include essential items such as one tracksuit, two t-shirts, a kitbag, one pair of shoes, and socks, amounting to Rs 10,100.
The reduced allocation fails to meet these essential requirements, which are vital for athletes representing Goa at the National Games.
While we appreciate the efforts of SAG in supporting sports and sportspersons, we urge the authorities to revisit the budget and approve a more substantial allocation. The athletes deserve fair and proper support to compete effectively and bring honor to Goa through their achievements.
The GOA said that it remains committed to advocating for the best interests of its athletes and ensuring they are provided with the resources they need to excel.
“We look forward to continued dialogue with the SAG to address these concerns and ensure Goa’s athletes receive the support they rightly deserve,” it added
