PANAJI: The Goa Open International WFSKO Karate Championships 2025 wrapped up on a high note at the Peddem Indoor Stadium in Mapusa, delivering an energetic display of skill and determination from young martial artists representing India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Kenya. The one-day event, held on 26 October, drew strong participation across age groups and belt categories, highlighting the growing reach of the sport in the region.
India dominated the championship and secured the overall title, followed by Sri Lanka in second place, Kenya in third and Nepal in fourth. The World Shotokan Karate do Academy (WSKA) Goa Team formed a key part of the Indian contingent, with 13 athletes competing across kata and kumite events. Their collective performance stood out, earning a total of 23 medals that included 7 gold, 6 silver and 10 bronze.
The WSKA athletes showcased both consistency and composure. Gold medalists included Rishabh Chodankar and Sahaana Naik in the under 14 brown belt divisions, Avni Bhivshet in the under 15 black belt category and a triple set of standout victories from the under 18 group through Sambhav Pednekar, Keerthi Porgia and Derick Rebelo. Several younger competitors also impressed with strong efforts, contributing to the academy’s total medal haul.
The championship concluded with the presentation of the Best Team and Championship Trophy to WSKA Goa. The award was received by Hanshi Sunil K. Dhargalkar, President and Chief Instructor of WSKA, in recognition of the academy’s medal count and disciplined preparation.
The event served as a strong platform for emerging Karatekas, reaffirming Goa’s reputation as an encouraging environment for martial arts. The enthusiastic participation and results are expected to boost interest in Karate across the state and motivate more young athletes to take up the sport.
The competition featured a diverse set of categories, offering opportunities for children, teenagers and advanced belt holders to test their abilities against international opponents. Organizers expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the overall standard of competition, noting the spirited sportsmanship displayed throughout the tournament.
