Panaji: In a major breakthrough, the Goa Police have arrested a notorious inter-state housebreaking and theft gang leader following a coordinated operation in Madhya Pradesh, displaying exceptional courage even in the face of a violent mob attack.
The case pertains to two major theft incidents registered on January 23, 2026. Porvorim Police Station registered Crime No. 03/2026 after unknown persons broke into a residential flat at Devashri Greens, Porvorim, and stole gold ornaments and cash worth approximately ₹6 lakh. On the same day, Mapusa Police Station registered Crime No. 12/2026 in connection with a housebreaking and theft case at Prudential Palms, Mapusa, involving valuables and gold ornaments worth around ₹35 lakh.
During the course of investigation, police established that the accused involved were residents of Alirajpur district in Madhya Pradesh. A joint investigation team comprising personnel from Porvorim and Mapusa police stations was deputed to Madhya Pradesh to pursue further leads.
The team coordinated with the Superintendent of Police, Alirajpur, and officials of Bori Police Station before proceeding to Bahadiya village. After a one-kilometre chase through a jungle area, the police successfully apprehended the main accused and gang leader, Hirasingh Bamniya (38), a resident of Alirajpur district. Investigations revealed that the accused is a habitual offender involved in multiple housebreaking and theft cases involving large quantities of cash and gold across several states in India.
Following his arrest, the accused was produced before the JMFC Jobat Court for transit remand. However, while being escorted to court, the police vehicle was allegedly intercepted and attacked by a mob armed with deadly weapons, including koitas and dandas, in an attempt to forcibly free the accused. The police vehicle sustained damage and the police personnel suffered minor injuries during the attack.
Despite the violent assault, the Goa Police team bravely retaliated, ensured the accused remained in custody, and safely withdrew from the spot until reinforcements from the Madhya Pradesh Police arrived. Adequate security was thereafter provided, and the Goa Police team is now safely returning to Goa with the arrested accused.
The Goa Police have commended the exceptional courage and professionalism displayed by their personnel and have also expressed appreciation for the prompt support and cooperation extended by the Madhya Pradesh Police during the operation.
