ANJUNA: A lady, the owner of the hotel, was dead and two others were injured after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) ran into the reception of a hotel at the coastal village of Goa’s Anjuna on Saturday.
The person killed in the incident was the owner of the hotel — Remedia Mary Albuquerque (57), while two other staff — Shiv Mangal Dindo (22) and Rupa Paras (31) — were injured.
The driver of the SUV, a Ford Endeavour was identified as one 42-year-old Sachin Venu Gopal Kurup, a resident of Pune’s Kondhwa. Kurup has been arrested and booked under the charges of culpable homicide, a Hindustan Times report said.
The accused was going to the La Maior Roma Resort in Anjuna’s Vagator, police said. The 2-ton SUV went straight into the reception after Kurup lost hold of the vehicle. Albuquerque and the two staffers were present at the reception counter at the time of the incident.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jivba Dalvi said that the accused had driven his car in a “reckless and dangerous manner, knowing full well that it could result in the death of any innocent person”. Dalvi added that the hotel owner was standing right near the counter when the SUV swooped into the reception.
Anjuna Police registered an offence under 304 IPC and took up an investigation.
The accused person namely Sachin s / o Venu Gopal Kurup age: -42 years r / o Villa Casa Blanca Assagao Bardez Goa n / o Kondhwa Pune Maharashtra has been placed under arrest.
The accused was subjected to medical tests for consumption of alcohol and drugs.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused person had gone to visit his friend who is residing at Jolly Jolly Lester resort, Vagator and during which he drove his car recklessly and dangerously knowing that same would result in the death of any innocent person and thereafter gave dash to Remedia Mary Albuquerque who was standing near the reception counter resulting in her death.
Further investigation is in progress.
