Panaji: In response to remarks made by AICC leader Girish Chodankar raising alarm over the law and order situation in Goa, particularly recent incidents in Calangute and Parra, the Goa Police has asserted that it has been responding swiftly and effectively to all reported crimes.
Chodankar, in a social media post, expressed concern over what he described as a “spiraling” law and order situation in the state, citing incidents of stabbing, taxi driver assault, vehicle thefts, and a recent murder in Parra involving migrants. He alleged that the police response has been slow and questioned whether Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, who holds 42 portfolios, is able to give adequate attention to public safety. He called for urgent intervention from the Chief Minister’s Office and Goa Police to restore law and order, especially in tourism-centric areas.
Refuting the claims, Goa Police issued a detailed statement outlining the actions taken in recent high-profile cases:
In the Parra murder case, both accused were apprehended within four hours of the incident being reported.
In the taxi driver assault case in Pernem, the police team chased the accused across the state border to Sawantwadi, apprehending one accused within six hours. The remaining two were arrested the following night in Maharashtra.
Of the six vehicle theft cases reported in the past week, five have been solved with the arrest of the accused and recovery of the stolen vehicles.
Regarding the Calangute assault case reported last night, an FIR was promptly registered, and multiple teams are working to apprehend the accused.
The police further stated “Goa Police has always been very fast and effective” and that it regularly conducts tenant and labourer verifications and takes preventive actions under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), while keeping tabs on known history-sheeters.
“Whenever a case is reported, swift investigation is initiated. Goa Police remains committed to ensuring the safety of both residents and tourists in the state,” the statement read.
The response from the Goa Police comes amid growing political scrutiny and public debate over rising crime incidents, especially in tourist hubs like Calangute, which sees high footfall during the season.
While opposition leaders continue to mount pressure on the government over internal security lapses, the police force has maintained that it is actively working to address every reported case with urgency and professionalism.
