PANAJI: Goa Forward Party (GFP) president and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has hinted that the next Goa Assembly elections, officially due in early 2027, could be held ahead of schedule in December 2026, amid indications that the Census exercise may be conducted next year.
Sardesai said there was increasing speculation within political circles about the polls being preponed. According to him, the possible timing of the Census was a key reason behind such discussions.
Stressing the need for political change in the State, Sardesai said Goa required a complete reset to restore its original ethos. He urged voters to elect sincere and committed legislators, stating that several current representatives needed to be voted out to make way for capable leadership.
“Making Goa what it truly stands for will require the election of new, good people. Ultimately, a lot also depends on divine will,” he added.
Highlighting the importance of a united opposition, the GFP chief cautioned that a divided front would only help the BJP retain power. He said the opposition would need to adopt a strategic approach and come together to effectively challenge the ruling party.
“If GFP contests alone, it will benefit the BJP. Unity among opposition parties is crucial,” Sardesai remarked.
Sardesai also backed Congress MP Viriato Fernandes’ initiative to introduce a Bill in Parliament demanding special status for Goa. Describing the proposal as both practical and attainable, he said special status was vital to protect Goa’s land, forests and village character.
He clarified that the demand did not involve any financial assistance but was aimed at preserving Goa’s identity and clearly defining who qualifies as a Goan.
Launching a sharp critique of the BJP-led government, Sardesai accused it of neglecting Goa’s interests. He alleged that the ruling party was more focused on commercial exploitation of the State rather than safeguarding its heritage.
“The BJP has failed to protect Goa and is intent on selling it to outsiders. The so-called double-engine government has not benefited Goa at all,” he said.
