PANAJI: Goa’s growing reputation as a premier host for global sporting events is accelerating its shift toward sports-driven tourism. Officials highlighted that the ongoing FIDE World Cup 2025 has further reinforced the state’s potential to attract high-value visitors while nurturing a vibrant sports culture.
The international chess tournament, underway in North Goa since October 30 and scheduled to conclude on November 27, has added to a strong lineup of major events the state has hosted in recent years. These include the IRONMAN 70.3 race, the 2023 National Games, and the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Goa Challenge. The Indian Super League also brings annual football fixtures to Fatorda’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, drawing large domestic and international audiences.
Leaders noted that such events contribute meaningfully to the tourism sector while inspiring young athletes and strengthening local sports ecosystems. Enhanced infrastructure and improved hospitality services have made Goa an increasingly attractive destination for organisers seeking world-class venues and seamless logistics.
Tourism stakeholders view these events as crucial to diversifying Goa’s appeal beyond its beaches. With eco and heritage tourism already gaining traction, sports tourism is now emerging as an important pillar for expanding visitor engagement. Industry representatives emphasised that hosting prestigious tournaments gives hotels, travel services, and local businesses greater visibility on the global stage.
Recent data reflects this momentum. Domestic tourist arrivals rose by over five per cent, increasing from 69.24 lakh in 2024 to 72.96 lakh this year. International arrivals registered an even stronger surge of more than 29 per cent, climbing from 2.59 lakh to 3.36 lakh. Tourism remains a vital contributor to the state economy, accounting for nearly 16.43 per cent of Goa’s GDP and generating 40 to 45 per cent of overall employment.
As Goa continues to welcome major sporting events, officials and industry leaders agree that sustained investment in sports infrastructure and facility maintenance will be essential to keeping this upward trajectory intact and establishing the state as a long-term hub for global sports tourism.
