PANAJI: The Public Works Department (PWD) of Goa has imposed a strict ban on road digging activities across the state starting May 15, 2025, ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. The directive, issued by the Chief Engineer of the National Highways and Roads & Buildings (NH, R\&B) division, mandates that no fresh permissions for road excavation be granted during this period.
In an official note circulated to all Executive Engineers across various divisions in Panaji, Margao, Mapusa, Bicholim, and Ponda, the department declared the onset of a *“No Digging Period”*, effective until the end of the monsoons.
“The Executive Engineers of Roads Sector are hereby directed to ensure that no digging of roads is permitted and no new permissions are issued from 15th May 2025 onwards,” the note stated. The department emphasized that any violations or lapses in compliance will hold the concerned officials personally responsible.
The annual monsoon ban on digging is aimed at preventing traffic disruptions, waterlogging, and damage to newly laid or existing road infrastructure, which often suffers due to uncoordinated utility works during the rainy season.
This year’s directive reaffirms the government’s intent to maintain road quality and public safety through the monsoon, which typically spans from June to September in Goa.
