NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Mines has released the State Mining Readiness Index (SMRI) and state rankings, aimed at promoting reforms in the mining sector. The initiative fulfills a key announcement made under the Union Budget 2025‑26.
The SMRI evaluates states based on indicators such as auction performance, early mine operationalization, focus on exploration, and sustainable mining practices for non-coal minerals. The framework is designed to highlight state-level performance and encourage best practices in mining.
Under the index, states were categorized into three groups according to their mineral endowment. In Category A, the top three states are Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. In Category B, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam secured the top three positions. Category C was led by Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Tripura.
The rankings are expected to guide policy reforms, enhance transparency, and boost efficiency in the mining sector across the country.
