PANAJI: Sports minister Govind Gaude on Monday evening said that Goa was willing to host sports events at the World championships level.
Gaude was speaking to reporters after the inauguration of the 33rd National Bench Press championship at Ravindra Bhavan Baina in the presence of Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar and other dignitaries.
“We have successfully hosted many sports events in Goa including the National games that were inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. We are now not only looking at National games but also eyeing for hosting a world championship at Goa. We have already received around three to four proposals for such world championship level events. In the year 2025-26, we are also willing to host the Khelo India youth games for the first time in the state of Goa and we are also going to host international championships also very soon. With the support of CM Dr Pramod Sawant, Goa is all set to host any kind of sports events and the National level and Global level , where the entire world is watching us. We are confident in bidding for any kind of sports events in the near future,” said Gaude.
Speaking on the 33rd National Powerlifting championship, Gaude said that he was extremely happy to see the record number of participants in the event being hosted at Goa.
“I want to congratulate the powerlifting association for hosting the championship in Goa. Every sport will be taken as a top priority in Goa and we will not fall short to cater to any requirements for such championships and sports events in Goa. I welcome all the participants and also congratulate Sankalp Amonkar who is the chairman of the Goa Super Bodies Powerlifting Association which is organising this championship. These games not only require strength but also a positive mindset from the athletes who will showcase their talents during the championship. The athlete needs to have a good diet and also needs continuous practice in such games and needs them to be very confident while participating. We welcome all the athletes and sports officials who have come to Goa from all parts of India ” said Gaude.
Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar that the event has created a record for the highest participation in the state.
“We are thankful to the support of Sports Minister Govind Gaude for the event by going out of the way and also the support of CM Dr Pramod Sawant. This is the first time that we have around 2000 participants from all 30 states besides the coaches. This competition will be held for 5 days and we will have the closing ceremony on the 18th of this month. We have around 90 participants from Goa in this tournament and We urge all the people from Goa to come to Ravindra Bhavan and watch this national championship and take the most benefit of this event,” said Amonkar.

VASCO: Satish Kumar Kudroli, the president of Powerlifting India said that the powerlifting sport has a presence in 184 countries.
“India is very good in Powerlifting at international level. India has won the championship in the powerlifting and bench press competition in the recently held Common Wealth Powerlifting games and most of our athletes have won gold medals. We are now selecting the team to represent India in the forthcoming International championships from this event. We have a record number of participants in this event at Goa. We had 1700 participants during the last championship at Bangalore but we have around 2000 participants in the national championships held in Goa,” said Kudroli.
