MARGAO: The Goa State Election Commission has announced the cancellation of the upcoming bye-election for Ward No. I of Village Panchayat Chicalim, located in the Mormugao Taluka.
The election, which was initially scheduled for May 11, 2025, has been called off following a judgment from the District Court of South Goa in Margao.
In a statement issued today, the Election Commission referenced the court’s decision and the subsequent order from the Department of Panchayati Raj and Community Development.
The Commission also cited the powers vested in it under Article 243K of the Constitution of India and Section 237 of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, as the legal foundation for the cancellation.
With the cancellation of the bye-election, the Model Code of Conduct that had been imposed in anticipation of the election is now officially lifted, effective immediately.
The cancellation has raised questions among local residents, as the bye-election was initially called to fill a vacant position in the Village Panchayat.
Further details about the decision and its implications for the local governance system are expected to be released in the coming days.
