MARGAO: Tourist taxi operators in Goa are expressing growing frustration with the government, accusing officials of harassment and failing to offer necessary support for their trade. Local taxi drivers voiced their concerns, stating that they were left with no choice but to resort to extreme measures if the situation does not improve.
Savio Goes, Vice-President of the North and South Goa Taxi Union Association, lashed out at the state government for its inaction, particularly over the promises made by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant during the recent Assembly session. Goes noted that despite Sawant’s assurance to address the issues facing the operators, no subsequent meeting has been scheduled.
He criticized the government for targeting local taxi operators, who comply with official taxi fare regulations and have invested in speed governors, meters, and GPS tracking systems. Meanwhile, he pointed out that hotels, casinos, and other tourism stakeholders inflate their prices during the peak season without facing any government scrutiny. “We follow the government’s fare structure throughout the year, unlike hotels and casinos, which increase their rates seasonally,” said Goes.
The taxi operators are facing significant financial strain, with many having large loans to repay for their vehicles. Goes claimed that despite their adherence to regulations, outside taxis have taken away much of their business. With subsidies withdrawn by the government, he warned that the situation could push operators to the brink of despair. “Without government support, we might have no choice but to commit suicide,” Goes lamented.
He called on the Chief Minister to fulfill his promise and meet with the operators to discuss solutions. Otherwise, Goes warned that taxi drivers and their families would take to the streets to demand justice and fair treatment.
