PANAJI: In a significant move to protect the coastal ecosystem, the Goa government has initiated a large-scale survey of approximately 3,500 mangrove-linked areas across the state with the aim of designating them as protected zones.
Speaking on the initiative, Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane said, “Mangroves are essential to keeping Goa’s coastline stable and our ecosystems thriving. These ecosystems regulate water flow, support marine life, and act as natural barriers against erosion. We are taking firm steps to preserve them and will act strictly against any encroachment or damage.”
The mangrove protection drive is part of a broader state-led environmental effort to safeguard ecologically sensitive areas, enhance biodiversity, and build resilience against climate change. Authorities have assured that once the survey is complete, strict monitoring and enforcement measures will follow to prevent illegal activities in the designated zones.
