SANKHALI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced today that the Goa government will soon open a centre of excellence in Konkani. He also stated he would establish a research cell to translate all government documents into Konkani.
CM Sawant was addressing the gathering after the inauguration of Konkani Karyashala.
“Goa government will soon open a centre of excellence in Konkani. Will also establish a research cell to translate all government documents into Konkani” said Sawant.
He further said that young graduates should learn to type and write in Konkani and that under the Goa Staff Selection Commission, Konkani has been made mandatory for candidates.
Sawant and the Konkani community should strive to promote their language, art and literature across the globe.
Sawant said the works of art and literature by the Konkani people need to be recognised by all. The popularity of the language had increased after it was included in the eighth schedule, he said.
He said that Article 29(1) of the Constitution of India provides protection to a certain section of the citizens residing in the territory of India or any part thereof to conserve its distinct language, script or culture.
“However, the Goa Official Language Act, 1987, provides the adoption of the “Konkani language,” which means that the Konkani language in Devanagari script is the official language for all official purposes of Goa,” he added.
CM said that the Act was enacted in pursuance of Article 345 of the Constitution of India. Both, Article 29(1) and Article 345 of the Constitution are on separate footing and therefore do not contradict the provisions of the Goa Official Language Act, 1987.
“The grants are allotted to all the institutions which are recognized as Grant-in-aid schools by the Directorate of Education and there is no special provision for grants to schools with Romi Konkani,” he added.
