MAPUSA: In a significant step towards strengthening wildlife conservation, the Goa government has announced plans to set up dedicated wildlife rescue centres across the state in partnership with Wildlife SOS, a leading wildlife conservation NGO.
Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane confirmed the initiative, emphasizing that the new centres will play a key role in addressing wildlife emergencies and rehabilitating injured animals. “We are moving ahead with establishing wildlife rescue centres in collaboration with Wildlife SOS, which will enhance our ability to respond swiftly to wildlife emergencies and provide crucial care for injured animals,” Rane said.
He added that the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage. “This will not only strengthen our conservation efforts but also ensure that Goa’s biodiversity is protected and preserved for the future,” he stated.
The proposed centres will be strategically located to improve response times and will be equipped with modern veterinary and rescue infrastructure. Trained staff and rapid response teams will be deployed to handle rescues, medical treatment, and rehabilitation of wild animals found in distress or conflict situations.
The collaboration with Wildlife SOS is expected to bring in technical expertise, best practices in wildlife management, and enhanced community awareness programs, aiming to reduce human-wildlife conflict in the region.
Wildlife SOS, which has successfully operated similar rescue and rehabilitation initiatives across the country, is known for its work with elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and other species in distress.
The project is seen as a crucial milestone in Goa’s broader environmental agenda and is expected to be rolled out in phases over the coming months.
