MARGAO: Water Resources Department Minister Subhash Shirodkar outlined plans to ensure that Goa’s water requirements will be fully met by the year 2047. He shared that the state government will be constructing an additional 100 bhandaras, bringing the total number of these water storage structures to 500 across Goa.
Shirodkar also highlighted the launch of a project to boost the water supply to South Goa, which includes the establishment of an additional 100 MLD (million liters per day) water treatment plant. Furthermore, he mentioned that North Goa’s water supply will be augmented through the Sal project.
Referring to the talukas of Dharbandora, Quepem, Ponda, and Sattari as Goa’s “rich water resources,” Shirodkar likened these areas to Punjab’s fertile wheat fields. He explained that the government is focused on tapping into the water from these regions through the bhandara system to meet the state’s water demands.
Additionally, Shirodkar discussed the ongoing expansion of the Selaulim water supply, which is set to increase by 100 MLD. Once completed, the project will ensure no water shortages in South Goa, including key areas such as Margao and Vasco. He also mentioned efforts to tap water from the Kushavati River, which will provide 8-10 hours of water supply each day.
Shirodkar reassured residents that these initiatives will address Goa’s long-term water needs and guarantee a steady supply of water across the state.
