PANAJI: The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, has handed over the operation and maintenance of 20 refurbished public toilets at key tourist locations to Sulabh International Social Service Organization (SISSO). The move aims to strengthen tourist welfare and promote Swachh Bharat initiatives across the state.
The Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) had earlier developed 21 public convenience blocks under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme at beaches and transport hubs, including Ashwem, Morjim, Anjuna, Candolim, Calangute, Baga, Panaji KTC, Margao KTC, Colva, Benaulim, Varca, Cavelossim, Mobor, and Palolem.
In 2021, operations were entrusted to a private contractor, but lapses such as poor upkeep, non-construction of promised facilities, lack of surveillance, and default in license fee payments led to the termination of the contract in June 2024. After arbitration proceedings and repossession of the sites, GTDC refurbished the toilets and ensured security at each block.
To avoid inconvenience to tourists, 20 toilets have now been handed over to SISSO on a “pay and use” basis, while the Candolim panchayat has been given responsibility for one toilet block. The handover is initially for three months, extendable by another three months.
Officials said the initiative will ensure reliable and clean sanitation facilities at major beaches and tourist hubs, reinforcing Goa’s commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism.
