PANAJI: The Lok Sabha elections in India continue with the third phase scheduled for May 7, 2024. This phase will witness 95 constituencies across 12 states exercising their electoral rights.
Goa is ready for the upcoming voting day scheduled for May 7, 2024, as part of the third phase of elections. With a substantial electorate of 1,179,344, the fate of the candidates rests in the hands of the voters.
North Goa accounts for 580,577 voters, while South Goa has 598,767 registered voters. In North Goa, female voters number 299,088, and male voters are 281,486. Meanwhile, South Goa has 308,627 female voters and 290,131 male voters.
Altogether, there are 607,715 female voters and 571,617 male voters across both constituencies.
Furthermore, the Chief Electoral Office, Goa has set up a total of 1,725 polling stations across the state, with 863 stationed in North Goa and 862 in South Goa, ensuring accessible voting opportunities for all eligible citizens.
43 Model polling booths have been identified in both North Goa and 45 in South Goa. For empowering Female voters, CEO has set up of dedicated polling station for women also known as Pink Booth.
20 women polling station has been set up in both North and South Goa District wherein polling station will be exclusively managed by women officials. To prioritize environmental sustainability, CEO, Goa has also set up 40 Green Polling Station both in North and South Goa.
Divyang Polling Station has been set up in both district wherein 5 in North Goa and 3 in South Goa wherein booth will be exclusively managed by PwD Officials.
ECI has started a new initiative, Youth Polling station has been introduced for upcoming Lok Sabha Election. As per instruction of ECI CEO,Goa will set up one youth Booth in both District in the state.
In North Goa, at Panaji Constituency and at Cumbharjua, has set up unique Polling Stations and in South Goa at Margao Unique Polling Booth has been set up. Unique booth stations focuses on uniqueness of the polling booth such as old heritage spot.
For the North Goa Lok Sabha constituency, the BJP has stuck to its OBC face, five-time MP and Union minister Shripad Naik, who is a member of the dominant Bhandari community.
Meanwhile, the Congress and RG have both played the tried-and-true strategy of fielding a Hindu (Ramachant Khalap and Manoj Parab, respectively) from the north and a Christian (Viriato Fernandes and Rubert Pereira) from the south.
After 25 years, Khalap (76) and Naik (71), two septuagenarians, are pitted against one another in North Goa. However, in the South Goa constituency, the BJP has fielded a female candidate, a political novice, to unseat Congressman Capt. Viriato Fernandes, a former activist and Navy veteran who is now running for office.
Pallavi Dempo, the richest candidate in the current general elections’ Phase 3, which is set for May 7, is a businesswoman from one of the oldest Goan families. Her net worth is estimated to be around Rs 1,400 crore.
Journalist Milan Vaigankar and Sakharam Naik have been nominated by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Akhil Bharatiya Parivar Party, respectively, while three independent candidates are also contesting in the North Goa seat.
