PANAJI: National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) Scientist has claimed that water diversion will have repercussions on the salinity of River Mandovi and the green cover of Goa.
“Goa will face some of the worst consequences if Mhadei is diverted. The salinity of River Mandovi will be badly affected, and this will have a catastrophic effect on the wildlife in the Western Ghats forest areas,” said Scientist Dr Anil Kumar.
He further said that Mhadei’s diversion will also leave the wells and other water bodies dry and the people.
House Committee meeting on Mhadei has demanded nationally reputed environmentalists be appointed to study the ill effects of River Mhadei diversion by Karnataka.
House Committee Chairman Subhash Shirodkar had said that the house committee on the Mhadei water diversion would appoint consultants and experts to submit reports on the ill effects of the pursuit by Karnataka within the next 20 days.
“We have been fighting the Mhadei river dispute battle at the administrative level. During the House Committee meeting, we discussed in detail,” Shirodkar had said.
