PANAJI: Goa witnessed a rise in road accidents in 2025, reversing the declining trend seen over the previous two years, the state government informed.
Transport Department stated that 430 road accidents were registered in 2025, marking a 0.90 per cent increase compared to 419 cases in 2024. In 2023, the state had recorded 423 accidents, reflecting a decline of 6.97 per cent from 2022, when 459 accidents were reported.
The government acknowledged the rise in road accidents over the past five years and said multiple preventive measures are being implemented by the Goa Police. These include strict enforcement of traffic laws, special enforcement drives, identification of accident-prone zones and black spots, and submission of road improvement proposals to civic bodies.
The House was informed that traffic police conduct spot inspections following fatal and serious accidents to ascertain causes, while Project TRUST, implemented jointly with the Transport Department, provides refresher training to drivers whose licences are suspended for traffic violations. Road safety education is also being imparted to various sections of road users, with Road Safety Patrol schemes promoted in schools and Traffic Warden schemes encouraged among citizens.
The government further stated that modern enforcement tools such as body-worn cameras, alcometers and speed radars are being used, and that guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety are being strictly followed.
On manpower, the government clarified that traffic police personnel are not deployed directly at police stations, and that deployment is handled through traffic cells across the state. Details regarding sanctioned strength, present strength and vacancies have been provided separately.
The Transport Department also informed the House that the Goa Road Safety Policy 2025 has been notified and published in the Official Gazette in May 2025.
Regarding monitoring of speeding violations, the government said proposals have been submitted to Smart City Panaji for installation of additional Speed Violation Detection Cameras, which are currently operated and maintained by Smart City Panaji.
