PANAJI: The southwest monsoon made a remarkably early entrance into Goa, arriving nearly two weeks ahead of its typical onset date of June 5. This marks the state’s earliest monsoon arrival in 19 years, with the last such early onset recorded on May 20, 2006.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the monsoon advanced into Goa just 24 hours after its arrival over Kerala—a pace not seen in recent years. “This is the fastest arrival of the monsoon in nearly two decades,” said Naushad Kulkarni, scientist at IMD Goa.
The monsoon has now covered all of Goa, along with parts of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and northeastern states like Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland.
In the days leading up to its arrival, the state experienced intense pre-monsoon activity, including heavy showers that caused localized flooding and uprooted trees. Responding to the situation, the IMD placed Goa under an Orange Alert until May 29, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. A Yellow Alert has been issued for May 30 and 31.
Fisherfolk have been advised to refrain from venturing into deep seas due to gusty winds and rough sea conditions expected during this period.
Meanwhile, the weather system that had earlier brought rainfall to the region has moved eastward over Madhya Maharashtra and has weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and stay updated with official weather bulletins as the monsoon season begins in full force.
