DELHI: In a significant push towards modernizing India’s legal framework, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has emphasized Goa’s pivotal role in effectively implementing three new criminal laws. These laws, designed to expedite justice and enhance conviction rates, have been a cornerstone of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s legal reforms. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to integrating technological advancements like e-Nyay and e-Summons, as suggested by Amit Shah, to streamline legal processes. The focus on achieving a high conviction rate and ensuring swift justice underscores the importance of these reforms in transforming India’s judicial landscape.
Implementing New Criminal Laws in Goa
Goa is actively working to fill additional posts necessary for the successful implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. These laws aim to revolutionize the legal system by ensuring timely justice and improving conviction rates. Amit Shah has urged Goa to become a model state in implementing these reforms, highlighting the importance of strict adherence to investigation and prosecution timelines. A key objective is to achieve a 90% conviction rate in cases involving punishments exceeding seven years.
The implementation process includes mandatory registration of all Investigation Officers (IOs) on the e-Sakshya platform and the full implementation of e-Summons by March 31, 2025. Senior police officers are tasked with closely monitoring cases related to organized crime, terrorism, and mob lynching to prevent the misuse of relevant provisions. Additionally, permission from a Superintendent of Police-level officer is required before registering cases under specific sections, ensuring a more controlled and just legal process.
