PANAJI: Concerns with abandoned cars occupying valuable parking spots in Panaji’s pay parking lots have been voiced by the Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN). These cars are dangerous for your health and safety, the association warned.
GOACAN noted in a letter to Clen Madeira, the Commissioner of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), that these cars could serve as mosquito breeding grounds, cause fires, and possibly be utilized for theft and other criminal activities.
Additionally, the consumer rights organization sent in images of abandoned cars in the Patto parking lot, claiming that their existence demonstrates the CCP’s inadequate parking space management.
Roland Martins, the GOACAN Coordinator, emphasized that the Pay Parking contractor does not have a mechanism in place to routinely notify the authorities about abandoned automobiles. “No action is taken because neither the Directorate of Transport nor the Traffic Police are informed about these vehicles,” he stated.
“It is crucial to report abandoned vehicles to the appropriate authorities so they can act in time, especially since crime is on the rise in Goa,” Martins continued.
The CCP Commissioner has now been encouraged by GOACAN to convene a joint meeting with representatives from the Pay Parking contractor and other relevant government departments. The goal is to enhance Panaji’s parking and traffic control while putting in place a suitable reporting system that will enable abandoned cars to be promptly removed.
