Benaulim: Francisco Fernandes, popularly known as Pele, a traditional fisherman and prominent voice of Goa’s coastal communities, on Sunday expressed deep anguish over recent incidents of violence and attacks on churches in Goa and parts of North India, appealing for unity, compassion and communal harmony.
Speaking from Benaulim, Fernandes said he was heartbroken by reports of vandalism of Christmas decorations, attacks on places of worship and threats issued to priests in recent days. He also referred to incidents of communal tension and violence reported from several towns in North India, stating that such developments had shaken the spirit of unity for which India is known.
“These attacks are not just on buildings or decorations; they strike at the very soul of the country,” Fernandes said, adding that India’s strength lay in its diversity and shared values.
Referring to the national flag, Fernandes said its colours symbolise courage, peace and faith, and urged citizens to uphold those ideals. He appealed for love, understanding and mutual respect among communities, particularly at a time when religious festivals are meant to spread joy and goodwill.
Fernandes also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who attended a Christmas morning Mass earlier this week, to ensure protection of India’s diversity and communal harmony. He called upon the leadership to take firm action against hatred and violence, irrespective of where such incidents occur.
In a separate appeal, Fernandes urged ministers and political leaders across the country who studied in Christian mission schools to reflect on the values of discipline, compassion and service imparted through those institutions and to stand up for peace and harmony.
Highlighting Goa’s tradition of hospitality, Fernandes said the State has always welcomed people from different faiths, cultures and backgrounds without discrimination. “That spirit of openness defines Goa and reflects the true idea of India,” he said.
As the new year approaches, Fernandes called upon citizens to act as custodians of peace and compassion, stressing that unity and respect for diversity remain essential for the country’s social fabric.
