PANAJI; Goa’s night sky is gearing up for a dazzling spectacle as the last supermoon of 2025 rises on December 4, offering skywatchers a bright and enlarged view of Earth’s natural satellite.
A supermoon takes shape when the Moon reaches perigee—its closest distance from Earth—at the same time it becomes full. This alignment, scientifically known as syzygy-perigee, makes the Moon look noticeably bigger and more luminous, sometimes by as much as 14%.
In Goa, the supermoon is expected to appear on the horizon at 5:22 pm and will remain visible until 5:50 am the following morning.
To help the public enjoy the event, the Association of Friends of Astronomy (AFA) Goa has organised free skywatching sessions across the state. No prior registration is needed.
In Panaji, enthusiasts can head to the public observatory at Junta House, while in Mapusa, the viewing will be hosted at the Saraswat College grounds in Khorlim.
Additional telescopes and guided observation points will also be available at Benaulim beach, Baina beach, and Art Park, Porvorim, giving residents multiple locations to take in the rare lunar display.
