PANAJI: Goa’s capital Panaji has lagged behind 15 Indian cities surveyed in the country in efforts to improve climate. The performance of Panaji city has become worse in this regard. Ahmedabad tops the list. This means that the condition of Ahmedabad is even worse than Panaji.
Climate Center for Cities and ICLEI South Asia have reported on this. And Panaji is only given a two-star rating in that. This means Panaji city needs to improve it a lot.
The biggest reason for this is the traffic in Panaji. The highest energy consumption in Panjit is in the transportation sector. 64.8 percent carbon fuel is used here.
This information has come out from the report of National Institute of Urban Affairs. Accordingly, data on per capita energy consumption, per capita electricity consumption and per capita greenhouse gas emissions were analyzed in Panaji in these 15 cities.
Sustainable tourism, preference for renewable energy sources, preservation of important ecosystems, adoption of climate friendly agricultural techniques are necessary steps to be taken for this.
The cities of Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Gwalior, Kochi, Nagpur, Pimpri Chinchwad, Rajkot, Shimla, Siliguri, Thane, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Udaipur and Vadodara are also included in the study.
Rapid urbanization, waste generation, energy consumption have turned these congested centers into major greenhouse gas emission hubs. As the population grows, it puts pressure on resources, increasing environmental problems and climate change, the report said.
Urgent action is required to adopt environmentally friendly policies. Only then can urban sprawl be brought under control and pave the way for a greener, more resilient future, the report says.
