PANAJI: In a step aimed at improving student nutrition and promoting healthy eating, the Directorate of Education (DoE), Goa, has directed all schools to cut down the use of cooking oil in mid-day meals (MDM) by 10%.
As part of this initiative, outlined in a circular issued by Education Director Shailesh Zingde, schools and mid-day meal suppliers operating under the PM Poshan Scheme have been asked to follow specific guidelines provided by the Union Ministry of Education.
The directive not only targets the nutritional content of school meals but also emphasizes the importance of health education. Schools have been encouraged to organize special classes on the benefits of using less oil, and to invite nutritionists from Home Science colleges and health institutions to interact with students and share tips on preparing healthy meals.
To further engage students, the DoE has proposed a series of awareness activities, including quiz competitions, essay writing, and group discussions on nutrition and fitness. Students are also being urged to adopt healthier lifestyles through regular exercise and yoga.
Teachers are advised to play an active role by identifying signs of obesity among students, guiding parents on portion control, and encouraging physical activity. Students may also be encouraged to prepare low-oil dishes at home, share pictures on social media, and spread awareness among their peers.
In addition, the circular suggests conducting practical cooking demonstrations at schools and recommending that school canteens serve low-oil, nutrient-rich meal options to reinforce these habits.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to combat poor dietary habits and lifestyle-related health issues among schoolchildren in the state.
