Navelim: Goa’s young badminton talents delivered standout performances on Day 3 of the Yonex-Sunrise All India Sub Junior (U-13) Ranking Badminton Tournament 2025, with home favourite Pragya Audi stealing the spotlight. In a gripping Round of 32 encounter, Pragya pulled off the biggest upset of the day, stunning second seed Shanvi Nimma of Telangana 14-21, 21-17, 21-14 at the Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium, Navelim. Backed by an enthusiastic local crowd, the 12-year-old displayed nerves of steel and remarkable resilience to book her spot in the Girls Singles Pre-Quarterfinals.
Adding to Goa’s joy, the Girls Doubles pair of Avni Khyalia and Amaira Dhumatker advanced to the last 16 with an assured straight-game win over Andhra Pradesh’s Evelyn Priyank Chavali and Sri Pravya Ponnaganti, registering a confident 21-14, 21-16 victory.
Elsewhere, Michael Ryan Mare, Goa’s top-ranked boys shuttler, put up a spirited fight but went down 12-21, 17-21 against Karnataka’s Nakulan Hari N. D. in the Boys Singles Round of 64. In the Boys Doubles, Goa’s leading pair Vishwa Parab and Samarth Sakhalkar were overwhelmed by the Telangana duo of Advait Sattu and Advik Shukla, losing 5-21, 9-21. Neil Punjani Bakshi of Goa also exited in the Boys Singles main draw after a 6-21, 4-21 loss to Karnataka’s Sanshray Sunil.
In other Girls Singles action, Goa’s Avni Khyalia went down fighting against Andhra’s Keya Kosaraju, 21-17, 21-14 in the Round of 64. Earlier in the qualifiers, Michael and his Telangana partner Sai Charith Abbu narrowly missed out on the main draw, losing the final qualification round to Swarit Kumar and Ilanjithra Dev R. 15-12, 15-9.
Among the top seeds, Jashwanth Mahamkali of Andhra Pradesh, the top seed in Boys Singles, survived a tough test against Rajasthan’s Anand Maderana, winning 21-17, 23-21. Third seed Nomaan Pappu (Tamil Nadu) was clinical, cruising past Karnataka’s Sai Lingesh 21-6, 21-9.
In Girls Singles, top seed Asha Sree Dandu (Andhra Pradesh) powered through both her matches in straight games, while seventh seed Anya Proddatur (Telangana) dominated Thanisshta Srinivas Kumar (Telangana) 21-6, 21-6 in a lopsided contest.
The day also saw another major upset in Boys Doubles, as the unseeded Andaman duo of Tagu Debia and Kyon Tamin shocked second seeds Adhvik Arvind and Methelan Prathima (Tamil Nadu) with a 24-22, 21-11 win, sending ripples through the doubles draw.
With local hopes high and intense action across courts, the tournament continues to deliver high drama, promising more surprises as the knockout rounds unfold in Goa.
