MUMBAI: In a strategic move to diversify its leadership, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is embracing a new era by appointing representatives from lesser-known cricketing states to key positions. This shift is marked by the recent appointments of Devajit Saikia from Assam as secretary and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia from Chhattisgarh as treasurer. Now, Rohan Desai, the current secretary of the Goa Cricket Association, has taken up on the role of BCCI joint secretary, further solidifying this trend. This development not only reflects a change in leadership but also signals a broader strategy to empower smaller state associations within the cricketing ecosystem.
Rohan Desai’s appointment as the new joint secretary of the BCCI is a significant milestone in the board’s evolving power dynamics. Currently serving as the secretary of the Goa Cricket Association, Desai is set to assume his new role following a Special General Meeting (SGM) held on March 1, 2025, in Mumbai. The position became vacant after Devajit Saikia was elevated to the role of secretary, a move that followed Jay Shah’s appointment as ICC chairman.
This strategic appointment reflects the BCCI’s intent to involve office bearers from smaller state associations in key roles, marking a departure from traditional power centers. Despite intense lobbying from candidates in the West Zone, Desai’s nomination was finalized, underscoring the board’s commitment to this new approach. The BCCI’s decision to empower smaller state associations is seen as a positive step towards fostering a more inclusive and diverse cricketing landscape in India.
