Sanguem: In a display of budding cricket talent, the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs in Goa organized a highly competitive U/14 years boys’ leather ball cricket tournament at the Sanguem Sports Complex from January 31 to February 7, 2025. This event marked a significant milestone in identifying and nurturing young cricket players in the region.
The tournament saw fierce competition among local schools, with The New Educational Institute, Curchorem, emerging as the champion. They secured their victory by defeating Sarvodaya Educational Society’s High School, Curchorem, in the final match by 37 runs. This win not only highlighted the team’s skill and determination but also underscored the growing cricket talent in Goa.
The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Campal-Panaji, Goa, was instrumental in organizing this successful tournament. Held at the Sanguem Sports Complex, the event drew participation from several local schools, each vying for the top spot.
In the semifinal match, The New Educational Institute, Curchorem, dominated Smt. C. T. N High School, Curchorem, with a convincing 103-run victory. The score stood at 144-41 in a 20-over match, setting the stage for their final showdown.
The final match between The New Educational Institute and Sarvodaya Educational Society’s High School was equally thrilling. The New Educational Institute scored 154 runs, while their opponents managed 117 runs in 20 overs, securing a 37-run win for the champions.
Holy Cross Institute, Quepem, took the third place, rounding out the top three positions in the tournament.
The winning team from The New Educational Institute, Curchorem, included talented players such as Tirtesh Chandgadkar, Tej Bene, Vardhan Ghate, Nihal Kakodkar, Pushkin Kalekar, Pratyush Bhandari, Suryansh Sawant, Anikesh Kumar, Piyush Patil, Hanish Naik, Samarth Gaonkar, Pragnay Gaonkar, Nigam Gaonkar, Aaransh Naik, and Tanishq Naik.
Technical officials, including TSO Mr. Vivekanand R. Tambi, P.E Tr. Mr. Sagar Gosavi, Mr. Charles Gonsalves (Ex.P.E Tr. NEI), and other officials like Mr. Tushar Prabhu, Mr. Rohan Dhatre, and Mr. Priyanshu Bhandari, played a crucial role in the smooth execution of the tournament.
This tournament was more than just a competition; it was a platform to identify and nurture the young cricket talent in Goa, ensuring a bright future for the sport in the region.
