CHICALIM: Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho reassured Goans that there will be no mass demolitions of homes in the wake of a recent High Court directive concerning illegal constructions. Speaking at a function held to commemorate the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar at Chicalim, Godinho strongly refuted claims of widespread demolition, calling it “unnecessary fear-mongering” and “negative propaganda.”
“There is panic among people that all houses will be demolished after the High Court order. I want to assure everyone that the Government is concerned about its people,” he said. “Only structures that encroach upon highways and roads—mainly in areas required for widening—will face action. We cannot demolish 30,000 houses. The Government will ensure that a fair decision is made in favour of the public.”
The event was organised by Panchsheel Buddha Vihar Murgao-Goa and paid tribute to Ambedkar’s enduring legacy as the architect of the Indian Constitution and a crusader for social justice, equality, and education.
Addressing the gathering, Godinho highlighted Ambedkar’s contributions and stressed the importance of educating the younger generation about India’s constitutional values.
“Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar has given us the Constitution and we must remember this contribution and the freedom struggle. Patriotism is the need of the hour, and citizens must realise this is our own country and we have to contribute towards its progress,” the minister said.
Godinho also revealed plans to upgrade the Ambedkar statue at Chicalim. “We have received a proposal to replace the current statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar. A detailed plan is in place, including relocation and beautification, with a permanent ladder and other facilities. Work is delayed as we await the NOC from the Communidade,” he informed.
Touching upon ongoing development projects in the Dabolim constituency, he acknowledged minor delays in flyover work due to design changes but reiterated the Government’s commitment to completing Rs 650 crore worth of infrastructure projects.
“Some leaders are opposing development for the sake of it, without valid reasons. But no one can stop development projects that are meant for the benefit of the people,” he said.
