PANAJI: The third edition of the GVCA Veterans Cricket Tournament commenced on Thursday with matches held at the GCA Ground in Porvorim and the SAG Ground in Chicalim. The event, organised by the Goa Veterans Cricket Association, witnessed a vibrant opening marked by impressive performances and competitive fixtures.
The inauguration ceremony in Porvorim was attended by former Goa Cricket Association President Chetan Desai, GVCA President Vinod Phadke and other dignitaries. In Chicalim, the tournament was declared open by MLA Daji Salkar along with Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Girish Borkar.
On the opening day, Gomanchal Warrior, Desserts N More Avengers, Vasco Warriors and Priority Titans began their campaigns with victories.
At the GCA Ground, Gomanchal Warrior posted 195 for six in 20 overs, driven by a fluent 64 from Ram Nagvekar and a solid 46 from Ravi Shetye. Cricket Corner replied with 166 for five, with Abhijit Kadam scoring 44, but the chase fell short. Ram Nagvekar was named the player of the match.
Desserts N More Avengers delivered one of the day’s standout batting displays, putting up 205 for four. Vikas Desai led the charge with a commanding unbeaten 98, supported by Pritesh Naik’s 34. Cafe Bhonsle were bowled out for 114 in 14.5 overs despite contributions from Sagar Kore and Razashad Shaikh. Vikas Desai earned the player-of-the-match award.
In Chicalim, Vasco Warriors secured a 159 for three total, powered by an explosive 83 from Asad Pathan. Mallikarjun Veterans responded with 151 for seven, guided by a 59-run effort from Siddhesh Prabhu Alvencar, but fell short of the target. Asad Pathan was recognised as the standout performer of the match.
The tournament continues with more fixtures lined up in the coming days as teams aim to build early momentum in the competition.
