New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s digital infrastructure, tech giant Google is set to invest $6 billion in a 1 GW data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marking one of the largest data centre projects in Asia. This strategic investment forms part of a broader $7.9 billion commitment from Google and ICT services provider Sify Technologies, significantly enhancing the state’s digital capacity.
According to senior officials in the Andhra Pradesh government, the Google facility alone will feature an integrated renewable energy capacity worth $2 billion, reinforcing the state’s vision of building sustainable and energy-efficient infrastructure.
In addition to Google’s investment, the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet recently approved Sify’s proposal to develop a 550 MW data centre in the state with an investment of $1.9 billion.
These developments follow the launch of Andhra Pradesh’s IT & GCC (Global Capability Centres) Policy 4.0 (2024–2029), which is aimed at transforming the state into a hub for IT and data-driven industries. The policy includes attractive capital subsidies, rental assistance, power incentives, and tailor-made support for large-scale projects.
Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh, a key architect of this digital expansion, stated that the state has already secured 1.6 GW of confirmed data centre capacity and aims to scale it up to 6 GW over the next five years. This is part of a broader ambition to place Visakhapatnam on the global map as a premier digital gateway, supported by plans to set up three new subsea cable landing stations in the city.
Renewable energy will be at the heart of Andhra Pradesh’s data centre expansion. The government has targeted 10 GW of additional power generation capacity, with a significant portion expected to come from green energy sources.
The data centre boom is also expected to create thousands of jobs across technology, infrastructure, and support sectors. The state has launched various skill development programs, including the “Future Skills Credit Scheme”, to prepare a future-ready workforce capable of meeting the growing demands of the digital economy.
These landmark deals not only position Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in digital infrastructure but also highlight India’s rising significance in the global tech ecosystem.
