New Delhi: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been detained for nearly six months under the National Security Act, is set to be released after the government decided to revoke the detention order following a review of the case.
The decision was taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs after considering the circumstances surrounding his detention. Authorities stated that Wangchuk had already completed nearly half of the permitted detention period under the preventive law, which influenced the decision to withdraw the order with immediate effect.
The government said the step reflects its commitment to maintaining peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh while enabling constructive discussions with all stakeholders. Officials emphasised that fostering dialogue is essential for addressing concerns raised by people in the region and for ensuring long term stability.
Authorities also highlighted that they have been in regular contact with community leaders and various groups in Ladakh to understand local aspirations and grievances. The government expressed hope that these issues can be resolved through meaningful engagement and through discussions conducted under mechanisms such as a High Powered Committee and other appropriate platforms.
At the same time, officials noted that frequent shutdowns and protests in the region have disrupted normal life and affected several sections of society. Students, job seekers, businesses, tour operators and tourists were among those impacted, while the broader regional economy also faced setbacks due to the unrest.
Wangchuk was taken into custody on September 26 last year following violent protests in Leh linked to demands for statehood and constitutional safeguards for Ladakh. The clashes resulted in four deaths and injuries to about fifty people, including security personnel. He was detained under orders issued by the district administration in Leh to maintain public order before being shifted to a prison in Jodhpur.
His detention had been legally challenged in the Supreme Court by his wife, educator Gitanjali Angmo, seeking his release. The revocation of the detention order now clears the way for his immediate freedom.
