New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared that any government failing to honor the principles of Sanatana Dharma would not regain power in India. He made the remarks while addressing followers of the Swaminarayan sect in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, during the 200th anniversary celebration of the Shikshapatri, a revered text authored by Bhagwan Swaminarayan in 1826. The text, composed of 212 Sanskrit verses, provides guidance on moral, social, and spiritual conduct, including non-violence, purity, diet, and daily responsibilities.
Shah highlighted the Shikshapatri as a practical guide for followers of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, emphasizing its role in shaping ethical behavior, social harmony, and personal discipline. Reflecting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, he said that for the past 11 years, India has been governed by Modi, whom he described as a leader committed to upholding Sanatana values. According to Shah, followers of these traditions had long awaited a government that would prioritize cultural and spiritual principles in administration.
The Home Minister cited several initiatives under the Modi government that, in his view, reinforce India’s heritage. These included the construction of the Ram temple, the abrogation of Article 370, the abolition of triple talaq, and the introduction of a Common Civil Code. He also pointed to efforts to revive ancient practices such as Yoga and Ayurveda, promote cow protection, and restore important pilgrimage sites including Badrinath, Kedarnath, Kashi Vishwanath, and Somnath.
Shah praised Lord Swaminarayan as a social reformer who, during the British era, traveled across India to promote community organization, discipline, and ethical living. He described the Shikshapatri as a “moral constitution for life,” guiding individuals on compassion, accountability, and self-discipline. He further highlighted the sect’s work in promoting girls’ education, opposing caste discrimination, and campaigning against animal sacrifice, noting that the Swaminarayan Sampradaya has consistently sought to preserve Sanatana values and advance societal welfare.
Emphasizing the timeless relevance of these teachings, Shah stated that the essence of the Shikshapatri lies in the welfare of all, reflecting India’s ancient cultural consciousness while instilling moral responsibility and discipline across society.
