In a major decision, the Government of Goa has decided to create two New Police Districts namely Mapusa and Ponda.
Goa earlier had just two police districts – Northa nd South Goa.
The Chief Minister announced this in a tweet saying there will now be a total of four police districts with four district SP’s.
“This decision will enable better and effective control over law and order, and prevention of crime,” he said
A government press release adds, the overall security scenario and the upward crime graph needs increase in Police Districts in the State of Goa. Over the years, the role and tasks of Goa Police have expanded and its functioning has become highly complex calling for a higher degree of professional skills and expertise. Moreover, the work opportunities to the people have led to migration which has resulted in influx of migrant population. In addition to the crime, there are other law and order issues, which police is required to handle on day today basis.
Since North District is geographically very vast and as number of crime prone areas fall in this District, it has become difficult for one Superintendent of Police to manage the whole district in preventing crime and to maintain law & order effectively. Further, the supervision of investigation of incidents of crimes is one of the major responsibility of the Superintendent of Police. Since the present District is too big, the Superintendent of Police is unable to give high priority and proper attention to the investigation of grave crimes in view of the sheer number of crimes reported in the District. The Superintendent of Police is also unable to visit all the scenes of grave crimes to inspire confidence of the people in police, since the number of grave crimes is very high in North District. Police work will also increase due to international airport at Mopa.
At present, the Police Sub-Division of Mapusa, Panaji, Porvorim and Bicholim fall under North District. The Headquarters of North District is at Porvorim and it cannot cater to the needs of the general public coming from remote places of North District, specially people from Bicholim and Mapusa areas and the surrounding areas as they have to travel all the way to Porvorim to meet the Superintendent of Police for redressal of their grievances. The creation of new District at Mapusa will enable better and effective control over law and order and in prevention of crime. It will also facilitate the people from remote places to visit District Superintendent of Police within a short time. Likewise District SP will also be able to attend meetings with people in remote areas.
Since South District is geographically very vast and as number of crime prone areas fall in this District, it has become difficult for one Superintendent of Police to manage the whole district in preventing crime and to maintain law & order effectively. Further, the supervision of investigation of incidents of crimes is one of the major responsibility of the Superintendent of Police. However, since the present District is too big, the Superintendent of Police is unable to give high priority and proper attention to the investigation of grave crimes in view of the sheer number of crimes reported in the District. The Superintendent of Police is also unable to visit all the scenes of grave crimes to inspire confidence of the people in police, since the number of grave crimes is high in South District.
The creation of new District at Ponda will enable better and effective control over law and order and in prevention of crime. It will also facilitate the people from remote places to visit District Superintendent of Police within a short time. Likewise District SP will also be able to attend meetings with people in remote areas.
