BICHOLIM: The Mayem Bhoo Vimochan Nagrik Kriti Samiti will hold agitation tomorrow on Independence Day to notice the government their plight of still being under Portuguese rule.
The agitation is also to demand immediate implementation of the Abolition of Proprietorship Act 2014. The Samiti members would agitate near the panchayat from 10 am.
“The Samiti is fighting for the rights of the Mayem villagers who are under the custodian act for the last many years. The government in 2014, through a law, had tried to abolish the custodian act and gave sanads to few. The work of the government is giving their rights over the land is going at a slow pace.” Samiti President, Sakharam Pednekar told.
“We thought that Mayem villagers would get at least one day when they would be liberated. Every time we were given assurances, nothing was done to resolve the issue once for all,” the secretary of the Samiti, Rajesh Kalangutkar, told.
“We had earlier requested the government to resolve this issue by August and had threatened to intensify our agitation.” He stated.
Sakharam Pednekar has urged other organisations to support them in this endeavour.
