Panaji: Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte informed the Goa Legislative Assembly that the state government is considering the introduction of mechanised beach cleaning systems to supplement existing manual efforts and enhance the upkeep of Goa’s beaches. Responding to multiple Calling Attention motions on the issue of beach cleanliness, the Minister said that the Department of Tourism is taking proactive steps to address public concerns and improve coastal sanitation.
Khaunte stated that cleaning operations are already being carried out on a war footing by the designated state agency. Despite the challenges posed by the monsoon, daily manual cleaning continues to be undertaken, especially in areas affected by natural waste accumulation, including so-called “beach vomit.”
He assured the House that suggestions from MLAs Deviya Rane and Jennifer Monserrate would be considered while developing a more sustainable and effective beach maintenance strategy. Regarding Kharewada Beach, the Minister said he has requested the local MLA to join him for an on-site inspection, noting that the area’s usage by the fishing community and for boat parking necessitates relocation before a comprehensive clean-up can be initiated.
